Itching for Spring Black bear

Well, except for the rest of you that are just remembering that there actually IS a winter season in Amercia, we've actually had a mild winter. Which means spring black bear will be appearing sooner than normal. Ah, the age old question, which rifle to get ready?!?

I had a custom .338-06 built awhile back, but my reloading stuff is still in boxes and I don't have enough rounds to sight in the scope and take Mr. Bear cleanly. And you can't find .338-06 commercial ammo anymore short of a new mortgage. Used the .30-06 last time, with 180-gr Speer Grand Slams and it worked like a charm. Love that bullet! But am thinking this year will be the stainless 7mm Rem Mag Ruger M77 Mk.II with boat paddle all-weather stock, and a 175-gr Speer Grand Slam load or else PPI's 158-gr "Thunder" ("Grom") load, which is suppsed to be very good also. The Serbs load ammo hotter than American companies do, and this almost-solid core copper bullet looks interesting.

Anybody have any experience with this load: Rifle Ammunition

Shoot the 30-06 with the 180gr premium load

I would bet that the 7MM Magnum shooting 175gr kicks alot more than the 30-06 shooting 180gr loads. You said you were happy with the performance last time with the 30-06, if it isn't broke don't change anything.

Ah, but that negates the time honored "reason" top have multiple long guns that overlap in capability. If ya got 'em, eventually ya need to use 'em! The .30-06 has been honored with a take several times, and the 7 Maggie hasn't. It is past due for fulfilling it's reason for creation and filling the freezer with summer sausage and chili fixings!

Well, I'll probably never get to 50 except on my (already past) driver's license and birthday cards. As for the gun rack, they like company especially at night when the guns swap tales of the woods. Each one needs a tale to tell, or they feel slighted and unloved. And they are loved ....

well today I hit 60. Sometimes I look back and ask where did all the years go? I have a new project on it's way. A nice maple striped stock for my CVA flintlock. The original stock is plain jane, hopefully the new stock will look better when I'm done.

I don't know what I was thinking.....

Of course take the Big 7. It deserves its time in the spot light. Where did I ever think to try to use logic. I really know better when it comes to firearms. They all have a personality on to themselvers. Logic is why I didn't get to buy each of my Sons new Deer rifles. My wife is smart I don't see what see sees in me. She pointed out that I didn't need new rifles if I had three Deer rifles already. My Sons then picked their rifles. I lost my Winchester M70 Featherweight in 30-06 that day.

If logic was used with firearms they would spell WANT and NEED the same way. They two have very little overlap even in the letter "N", which is 25% coverage. And that's about how logic gets used in aquiring, owning and using each very special firearm.

The Big 7 it is!

Already had one black bear sighting in town, trying to get into garbage. Bears will wake up hungry after a light winter.
