I am a big Ruger fan I purchased a Ruger American .308 for my daughter she was 14 when I got it
I would not call it a starter rifle as it should last you awile & the .308 does not have a lot of recoil but is a great hunting caliber
the American has some great features on it for cheap money ave. price here in NH is $350
P.S. purchasing one for myself so I have a "woods" gun & do't have to trash my M77 thick woods here

In my opinion, the best starter caliber for deer is the .243, not much recoil but it has developed a great reputation for getting the job done.
You should be able to find a rifle in .243 to fit you for $350.00 USD or less
Good Luck Always

While the Savage 300 is an older one it is a deer getting machine. 243 or a scoped Marlin in 30-30 or 35 will do great out to 150 yds and are a very safe first rifle.

We purchased a "starter" rifle for the Granddaughter this fall, a Ruger American Compact in .243. The rifle proved to be decently built and is surprisingly accurate for an entry level rifle. If ammo had been more available, I might have gone with a 7/08 and reduced recoil ammo (she is 9 yrs old). She did fine with deer loads in the .243 and it worked well for her size with it's compact design.

The plan is to have this rifle be the beginning rifle for all the Grands and as they get older, something more versatile will be acquired.

The newer 260 rem fits the young market also. Shoots a 140 gr bullet with little recoil. Fairly fast also. I think the extra bullet weight makes it bit better than the 243 win. Just don't get a Boss system as the noise is unbareable.

The 6.5x55 Swede doesn't kick at all

My buddies converted 6.5x55 is a dream to shoot, no recoil. I would bet that the 260 Rem would be the same. Just don't expect the Mom and Pop stores to carry either the 6.5x55 or 260 Rem.
