Leupold vs Burris rings and lapping?

I recently just picked up a leupold vx-2 scope to put on a FN built model 70 and was set on buying the dual dovetail mounts made by leupold, until the the guy at the shop said that I should use the leupold bases but use burris dovetail rings instead because they are better and require no lapping like leupold rings do. He said the leupold rings can leave marks on the scope tube where the burris rings do not. So if anybody has a idea on which is better I would be very happy to hear about it. I dont want to mess up a new scope. Thanks in advance.

rings and lapping

Depends on how serious you are about eaking out every last drop of accuracy. I have never lapped rings on a hunting rifle and never had any issues. But rifles I have carried professionally absolutely they get lapped and I use MarkIV rings, nightforce or badger ordinance.

I use the Burris rings on almost all of my scopes and love them. I haven't ever lapped a set and have never had any accuracy issues.

Use alignment rods when you mount the rings

I bought some alignment rods for scope mounting years ago and they are great. Picture two rods each machined to a point at one end. Place one in each ring loosely tightened then bring the points together to verify the rings are exactly true to each other in alignment. Lapping uses a different kind of one piece bar that goes through both rings at the same time. Loosely tighten the lapping bar with lapping compound on it. Moving the bar back and forth will then "lap" the two rings round de-burring them. I think you would want to lap them only after verifying that they are in alignment first.

I also have never lapped a hunting scope. I have used a lot of Weaver mounts with good hunting rifle accuracy. I do like to use the blue thread sealant.

MidwayUSA makes a great scope ring alignment and lapping kit, if interested. I own one, but haven't tried it yet.

Lapping

I would not mount any scope to a weapon of mine without lapping the rings.
