Until now, most of my whitetail hunting has been close cover or open woods. Iron sights or a low power scope have served well. This year I started hunting more open country where longer shots are more likely. I want to put a scope on my .30-06 for shots as far away as 300 yards, possibly slightly beyond. I prefer fixed power scopes and will probably go for an old El Paso Weaver. Hope to hear a few opinions as to whether I should go with 4X or 6X. I'd favor the 4X because of a wider field, but not sure I'll be able to see antlers at the longer ranges with anything less than 6X. Maybe some of you western hunters can weigh in on this.

I a fan of the 2X8, 3X9 or 4X10 in a good quality name. You get everything in one scope, low power for low light close ups and high power for long range when needed. The old Redfield widefields were and still are good scopes for PA.
