It's overkill for the shots I take around here. I have two 7mmRemMags and they are enough for long ranges.

Default Not a lot of press about it anymore..

For a while it seemed like the authors in magazines loved more powder pushing a bullet faster, faster, faster. Then people kinda went into the short Magnum craze, WSM, RSAUM and WSSM. After a while the companies desided we needed more regular non mag cartridges, 338 Fed,
308 Marlin, 338 Marlin. Finally they decided to write about the ones that have been with us around 100 years, the 30-06 and 270 Win. I don't think that it is harder to kill a Whitetail now then it was 100 years ago. I think that we are blessed with better rifles, scopes, and bullets then the generations before us dreamed about. We are very lucky that we can enjoy our love for Hunting and Shooting. I just personally feel bad when I see a new inexperienced shooter showing up with a magnum cannon. Those beauties have their place, but come with a price of admittion.

Default To bad the shooter (me) would limit it...

Even with a rifle capable of incredible performance the shooter has to be up to the task to hit at long ranges. I for one, know that I should not be shooting at anything alive much over 200 yards. To the shooters that brag about their ability to shoot at long range I always say to them "How often do you practice at ranges longer than 200 yards". Usually they replied that they only have access to a 100 or 200 yard range. I would try my luck at long range shots on paper past my comfort zone, but not at an animal.
