loose powder

Sorry for the ignorant post here guys but I have a question. We have always shot the preformed pellets in our muzzleloaders but I am thinking of switching to loose powder and was trying to figure out how exactly do you weigh it out. Would you do it the same way you weigh for reloading with a powder scale or is there something I am missing? I am not trying to sound stupid but I just dont know.

you can buy a powder measure that you can take into the field with you and set the grains to what ya want

The only dumb question is the one that is not asked!
The measurement is a volume measurement. What I did and I had to ask also,
was to get a good brass powder measure and some of the clear plastic or green or red or yellow powder holders, load my rifle with the powder charge I selected and then take 4 or 5 of the plastic containers and put your measured charge in it and off you go. I always have my measure and extra powder in the truck, well a fellow can hope to get that many shots. I use the blackhorn powder with a standard shotgun primer. (no crud ring) and for me tighter groups. Good luck

Do you guys get a cleaner burn with the powder over the pellets.

I'm shooting the triple7 pellets and always end up having alot of crap in my barrel after a shot have thought about, changing my load up to get a little cleaner burn.

Im still new to ML, but the residue is unburned powder correct??

I can only assume that it is unburned powder, I really don"t know,
but I do know I don't like dealing with it. I have shot this muzzleloader sixteen times without cleaning it ( I know I'm a bad boy, but this was all at one session at the range so I tried it and it did great) All I know is I'm much happier hunting and I have one less self induced issue to deal with and that suits me just fine. Plus my groups have shrunk and for me that is really satisfying. The powder cost more but what is cost compared the possible mishap or miss at "your" deer?
