No Blood ????

I just got my first deer with a muzzle loader this morning. It was 35 yards away in my range finder. I got a high lung shot and it ran about 20 yards from where I shot it. I recovered the deer easily, but there was no blood where I shot it, or a trail, and there was barely any blood on the entrance or exit wound. I was using a 54 cal, maxi hunter. I am just stumped.

congrats. blood isn't the only thing to look for. hair is one to look for at the impacted site as well. being a high hit most of the blood would be bled out inside. I'm sure if you got down close and looked you'd find a little blood but seeing the dead deer is way better. congrats again.

It is because that deer was dead on its feet. The shock stopped the heart from pumping and 20 yards is all the deer could do. When you see a deer just drop is most times caused by the shot caused damage to the spinal cord.

Thanks guys. I don't know how to explain it, but it feels so much more exciting to get a deer with a muzzle loader, then any of the deer I have taken with my rifle or shotgun. I am just waiting for a buck now. That would make my year.

I understand how you feel regarding the muzzleloader. I started with the rifle, moved to archery and flintlocks. Anyway congrats on the deer. A high shot sometimes won't leave a very good shot as the blood is all inside. Good news is you got it.
