Sidelock project

A couple months ago i picked this up on ebay. I had that darn itch for a sidelock again, ive done plenty of lyman great plains rifle kits and so i wanted bigger.

Picked up a cva hawken stock with 1" barrel channel. Uh huh you all remember the cva mountain rifle correct? Whats the biggest caliber it was offered in you say? 58cal!

It will take some custom work such as relocating a new dovetail for the barrel under lug but thats easy enough to do. Deer Creek still has plenty of the 32" 58cal 1:72 twist Douglas barrels cva used to use on the old mt rifles and so for $85 + shipping, I should be the first to own a 58cal cva hawken.

A heck of a lot lighter than the GPR but the hawken stock will need quite a bit of reshaping and spicing up. As for color? Not yet sure on the stain.

That would be serious elk medicine. Hopefully the stock has some figure in the wood. So many stocks were plain showing almost no grain let along figure. Good luck on the project.

ive wet the stock down and it shows to have some real nice figure in it. Im thinking about LMF stain to help make it pop.

Good choise I used that on my Hawken flintlock. I did blend two stains though to get what I wanted.

I have burned wood lightly before to accentuate the grain pattern on not so choice wood. Actually if you practice enough on scrap you can make plain ol pine or oak into a pretty nice lookin piece of wood by burning grain designs into it.

On many of the old leman rifles they carefully inked the figure into the wood to make it look like an expensive model. Some of the real artists were very good at faking with the black ink. Very few modern makers even attempt the lost art.

well i found a front sight with a small brass bead. I think i may order a williams peep sight for the rear. Ive given up on traditional sights since they are so danged hard to match correctly.

Jeeez! Deer Creek is a heck of alot cheaper than ebay! Ebay wanted $20 for a tang, i call and order, get prices first, $8.50 for the tang from deer creek and only $1 for the tang screw!

Barrel was a bit more than a few months ago $110 but still a hell of a deal.

ooooooh yeah! That 58 was a perfect thing for this project.
