In Alabama the bow season opens in mid October, the gun season in mid November. They run through January. The limit is two a day, one of which can be a buck. For the past two or three seasons they have imposed a three buck season limit. One of the three must have at least four points on one antler. Obviously trying to get people to kill more does and let the bucks grow bigger. So I could legally kill around 200 deer each season. (Don't think I'll ever get quite that many!)

This past season I killed two does. One with my crossbow and one with my .30-06. The last three weeks of the season I let a bunch of does and several smaller bucks walk because I was waiting for this guy but never did see him.

There IS something wrong with this list as Montana (MT) doesn't even appear on it. But I really don't care. When I first saw this list in the magazine, I was relieved that Montana hadn't been mentioned. NO sense spreading the word that we have a pretty good deer kill... and elk kill... and antelope kill... and .....

These numbers don't make sense to me either. I did a little quick research on Illinois and Missouri, if I have MO's numbers right(they don't give a GRAND TOTAL) I come up with a total MO kill of somewhere between 275,000 and 290,000 on roughly 660,000 total tags sold. For Illinois I found roughly a total kill of 182,000 on about 635,000 total tags issued. Yet MO is listed below Illinois. So on approx. 25,000 to 30,000 more tags, MO killed about 100,000 more deer than Ill. Doesn't add up, does it?? Tator, do my numbers seem close for your state?? Just curious.

Here in ky I think mid list is a about right, we (the west side of the state) got hit hard with the blue tounge a few years ago and we are really just now starting to see good numbers again. We also have areas of the state that's full of deer and areas you couldn't find one even if you did a burn out. Most of the state has a low bag limit but there are a few areas with unlimited doe with bonus tags bough at two doe per bonus tag. I also like how they (fish n game) have our state broke up into (zones) they rank thr deer population in each county and according to the numbers would determine the zone for that county, it is either zone 1, 2, 3, or 4 and in the hunting guide each zone has its own bag limit.

[QUOTE=buckfever;52497]Here are prices for lifetime license...

Under 3 years of age - $200.00
3 years of age but less than 7 years of age - $540.00
7 years of age but less than 13 years of age - $810.00
13 years of age but less than 51 years of age - $1,620.00
51 years of age but less than 65 years of age - $945.00
65 years of age or older - $270.00

These prices seem like a great deal if you could afford to pay them up front. The "3 years of age" would be a great lifetime gift to get for a kid, unless they wind up not wanting to hunt. Of course, even imagining a three year old hunting seems a little far-fetched - to me, just another tag for dad to fill on the sly - and I don't condone that!

Alabama won't be on the top of the list for long. Insurance companies would be happy if all the deer in the whole state are killed and have lobbyist in Montgomery to see to it. They encourage way too many does to be harvested and it is starting to show. 10 years ago I would go and watch deer. Now I MIGHT see 1 on every other trip to the woods. I feel the herd size is over estimated and too many does are taken. Furthermore, we have a bill right now that would extend deer season another month. This will ensure a ton of pregnant does are killed and help solve the auto insurance companies problems.

I believe that what SteelSlinger says about Alabama is the same story here in Illinois. Up until the last 2 seasons I could pretty much kill a deer EVERY DAY in the little area where I hunt, now I'm lucky to see 25 or 30% of what I used to see. I understand that there are many many reasons for deer fluctuations, but I think there are WAY too many doe tags being issued. We have a first then a second lottery drawing for tags, after that there is a Random Daily Drawing for any leftover tags, and there are always tons of doe tags still available. We have a Late Winter Anterless Only season(3 day weekend in mid January) and in the county where I hunt the tags for this season are unlimited. Besides that, for the last 2 seasons they added an extra 4 day doe only season in addition to the regular 3 dayer. Doesn't make any sense when a guy can hardly kill a doe during the first two gun weekends. Over the years I've become good friends with a local deer processor who has customers come from many of the surrounding counties, and his count has been way off the last two years also. If the auto insurers could totally have their way the only place you could see a deer would be in a zoo.

Here in SC the coyote population has increased dramatically over the last 10 years. They appear to wreak particular havoc on the fawns so this must be their favorite time of year. I guess at some point their numbers will stabilize based on available food sources but it seems a shame. Unaware that there is anything that is or can be done about it.
