DEER rack mounts...

Got a question and I'm sure someone knows the answer! I had the rack of my most recent buck sawed off in a wedge shape w/part of the skull still attached to the rack on both sides. Is there some type of solution I can soak this in to get the "meat" and hide off of the skull so that I can mount it? I've seen where people have the rack hanging up and the skull is BRIGHT white... how do they do this? any help would be appreciated...

last season i did one. i cut the skin and meat off with a skinning knife and covered with borax soap , dry for 2 weeks. did a good job and no smell. then used a do-it yourself plaque kit from Dick's sporting good.

  1. Bring the water to a boil in the large pot and then drop the skull in. Allow the skull to boil for at least 1 hour or until all of the meat has fallen off.
  2. 2
    Mix a 2-to-1 water-to-bleach mixture in the 5-gallon bucket and allow the skull to soak in it for 24 hours or until the skull is bleached white.
  3. there is more on the web site explaining how to complete the mount I only posted the meat removal & bleaching

to make it white, down here we use peroxide, but you have to get the stronger stuff from a beauty supply store. the stuff at the drug store is not strong enough.

you can do the 2 to 1 water and bleach mixture but make sure you're only boiling/bleaching the skull, if the horns are in the solution they will whiten too.

Exactly, you have to protect the horns. wrap and tape them in paper. Boiling will help taking the meat off. Once you have all the meet off soak in peroxcide but you have to keep the antlers out of it.

You can buy small quantities of perocide at stores that sell hot tub treatment. The oxcidizer(sic) for the bromine is the same as peroxcide but stronger. It will turn it white.

If your to busy to go hunting, your just to busy.

I have a more "natural" solution to getting all the meat out of the skull. In central Texas you either have ticks on your place in the country or you have ants - but never both. It seems as if having a good ant pile here and there keep the ticks down. What does that have to do with all of this? Grip the antlers firmly in each hand and bury the skull as deeply into the ant hill as you can, twisting all the while to ensure that you get the whole ant pile/hill all good and riled up. Then let sit for several days and presto -- clean as a whistle.

More than one way to skin a cat, right??? Or will that comment get all them PETA folks all riled up too? <grin>

All those above ideas will work.

I left some of my racks outside in the building for awhile.. I moved them later on and noticed a bunch of tiny bugs crawling all over the skin of one of the racks. Im assuming they were eating off the skin because on 2 of the racks they had already cleaned them off to a pretty shine.

Ive never heard of the ant hill trick.. Im going to try it just to see if it works. (that is if I can find an ant hill. Spent plenty of time earlier this year trying to clean them outta the yard.
