Yes Bruce I use DEER urine. This however is not what I was really referring too. Deer are attracted to strange smells and curiosity has killed many deer. We need to keep in mind the BIG picture though. In the real world for most of us is hunting pressure, other hunters---MANY hunters that are hunting around or in our hunting areas. All it takes is one negative event regarding a certain scent in the life of a deer to put the animal on alert everytime it encounters that smell. Deer urine, acorn scents, honey suckle extract,etc... all have some or majority positive results in the life of a deer but human urine and or scent means but one thing ---death. Probably the biggest mistake we tend to make is forgetting about other hunters in the woods around us. Just because we might follow all of the proper precautions about scent and wind does not mean the rest of our brothers do.
In early season we can get away with many more mistakes regarding scent and sound but as season progresses the window of error becomes smaller and smaller at an alarming rate (pun intended). If you really want to up your odds and extend your season in your honey hole you must keep it void of human scent of any kind as possible. Change your travel routes to and from your hunting locations often. If it was possible to be 100% scent free deer can scent the disturbance caused by human foot steps, no other animal in their environment leave such a large track. All of this being said why would we tempt fate by urinating around our stand much less anywhere around our hunting property---too lazy to carry a bottle?
When we go hunting the most important thing we all have on our mind is to see deer. Many will say different with comments like " I hunt for the outdoor experience"------HOG WASH. Hunters are there to hunt and hunt means killing something after all that is what we are there for.
The cool thing about this site is the number of new hunters on here both young and old. I look at it as my responsibility as a seasoned hunter (over seasoned) to help these new comers be successful even if it sounds like over teaching. Lets face it none of us are professional hunters here but there are a lot of darn good hunters here with tons of knowledge to share.
I have heard Charley Alsheimer himself state that he has urinated in ACTIVE scrapes with positive results but I have also heard him say never anywhere else or outside the rut. I don't do it at anytime but then again I have never gambled at a casino or bought a lottery ticket either.
