Pine beatles

About 5-7 yrs ago pine beatles come through north Ga well about all of Ga killing most every pine tree bigger than your wrist, a couple yrs ago the forest service started doing controlled burns to clean up the mess of all the dead rotting trees. Which really has healped with the ground level foliage but now its getting so thick that seeing anything will be hard till the leaves fall off. But I still think its going to be a good year because the deer have alot of fresh tender growth to eat all summer. Has any other states been hit hard like Ga, we also got an aphid killing all our hemlock trees which is hurting our mt. trout streams.

We had the same problem with the beetles in East Tennessee, they killed no telling how many thousands of acres of pine forrest. I think they should have learned a leason about converting the hardwood forrst into pine for the pulp wood industry but they are still planting.

Your right about it being good for the deer heard, at least until the pines get bigger and chokes out all the browse. You kind of get a boom and bust with the deer population over about a ten year period.

I think I will be shocked when I get back to Colorado in 2010. Beatles are killing every pine tree in sight, allready 30-50% loss.

Nothing like that here. just the gypsy moth which are sprayed for. But the thick overgrowth will give alot of cover for the big deer and also help in nutrition for the summer months down there in Ga.
