Three Men Arrested for Poaching Deer in Waterbury and Stowe

WATERBURY, VT--Vermont State Game Wardens arrested Lucas Ashley, age 28, of Shelburne, Jason Trieb, age 26, of South Burlington, and William Mitchell, age 50, of Starksboro Vermont on October 19 for illegally taking five deer at night with a light.

State Game Wardens initiated the investigation following a tip from a concerned hunter who had observed a man loading an eight-point buck into a truck in Waterbury Center and thought it suspicious. The wardens interviewed the truck owner and obtained confessions leading to the seizure of the illegally taken deer.

The three men admitted in sworn statements that they had shot the deer from the vehicle with a crossbow while shining a flashlight on them. The three doe and two bucks were illegally shot in the Waterbury Center-Stowe area over two consecutive nights.

The crossbow and flashlight were seized as evidence, and the five deer were recovered from four different houses. Wardens believe there were more illegal deer involved.

Mr. Trieb and Mr. Mitchell were cited to appear in Lamoille County court in January to answer to the charges. Mr. Ashley was cited into Lamoille County and Washington County court in January to answer to his charges.

If convicted, all three men face potential fines and restitution up to $ 7,500 for the deer, confiscation of their equipment and up to 60 days in jail for each count.

Anyone with information regarding poaching activity is urged to contact a state game warden through the nearest state police dispatch, or by making an anonymous call to Operation Game Thief at 1-800-75 ALERT.
