Food Sources

I went to scout the spot I am looking ti go opening day of archery season. It is wedged between a field, acorn trees, and thick holly trees that run from power lines. It is a sweet set! I have a couple questions pertaining to food sources.

1-The field was tilled and re-planted. Some grass is coming up but it is mainly still dirt with a few good patches. Across the gravel road is a much more mature field. Will deer still feed on young grass? The deer I saw while driving were next to the roads (paved) feeding on grass.

2-Any idea on the mast for this year in the eastern states? Beechnuts are falling but I don't see many acorns. Is that typical?

Thanks for your time!!

Acorns start falling right about now here...White Oaks are the better acorn deer like here.

here is a pic of the acorns from were I hunt in NC. They or a few years old and have dried and shrunk abit, But you get the point. Hope they aint falling yet. Also apples are gonna be rare this year. Had a wind storm right after all the apple trees bloomed and not a bloom was left. good thing or bad thing not sure yet

Thanks guys. Obviously, acorns don't fall the same year in and year out. I just don't seem to see many yet and don't know when they are supposed to fall. I would imagine they should be showing more by now. Probably an off year, which will be good for where I hunt. Last year deer had to stretch their necks from bedding areas to feed on the abundance of acorns. This year, they should have to move around a lot more. Fields it is!!! New growth and brush early then switch to fields mid-late October and on.
