Two *very* basic questions

Hello all - I do not hunt, but I am writing a story whose main character does. I'm hoping you can help me with two basic questions:

1) My hero has just bought a Browning A Bolt II Medallion for whitetail hunting. What ammunition is appropriate for this weapon?

2) If you hunt whitetail for food, as opposed to trophies, would you prefer bucks or does, or does it not matter?

Thank you very much in advance, and very good luck to you in your hunting!

no idea on the ammo... some say younger deer are more "tender" and older deer more "tough"... depends on how you eat the meat too...
