the other day when i went hunting the wind was blowing about 20 mph so i decided to just hunt low instead of blow around in my treestand up on the mountain. i set up just inside the treeline so i could watch the fields where they cross between two ridges. i heard some deer coming from behind me and to my right so i set up on my knees and faced them with gun ready for when they stepped out. it was only four does so i set my gun down and just enjoyed the show. the lead deer saw me from about 20 yards away and looked at me for a few secs and then put his head down and started munching. then it started moving closer till it was about 8 feet away. at this point it looked at me again for what seemed like 2 hours. then i guess it decided i was no threat and just continued on its way. i know i did not spook it at all. after it moved on it started feeding again facing away from me at prob 10 yds. i could have moved my gun back up and blew it away at this point. it had to hear my heart beating a hole in my chest.
what surprised me is it never stamped its front paw at me or raised its head up in the air to try to wind me. it was pretty neat to be that close to a wild animal without spooking it. i was waiting for it to come eat my peanut butter crackers i had sittin in my bag.
as many does as you let walk this year it prob knew you would not shoot anyway. that would be kinda neat to be that close to a deer though
:whistling: Back several years ago when I was working in Jasper land surveying, we were looing over some property. We heard deer coming up the ridge, so we stopped to see what would happen. Two deer, both young, came within 15' of us and just checked us out. After about 5 minutes or so, they walked away. I guess they could tell we didn't have more than a pocket knife between us. Most likely they thought we were just a couple of odd looking turkeys......
