This is what I was afraid of.Last fall CWD was found on Pennsylvania deer farms.Now it has been found in wild deer in PA.

Apparently,the only control is to kill every deer in the infected area.

Thats what they did in Wisconsin and that caused a drastic drop in deer numbers. I had a friend who went from seeing 150 deer in a season to 50 in one year! Even in areas that were not even infected.

How exactly is this CWD started? From deer feeding too close to bait piles with each other?

In October 2012 CWD was detected in two captive deer on a deer farm in Adams County, Pennsylvania. And in March 2013 the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) announced that three free ranging hunter killed deer had tested positive for CWD from the 2012-13 hunting season

Two deer in Blair county and one deer in Bedford county were CWD positive.CWD is spread by nose to nose contact and nose to soil that is infected by urine and feces.This is why deer farming and pens are a bad idea.Also, bait piles concentrate deer and spread the prions.It started in 1967 with captive mule deer in Colorado.

CWD swep up here in western ky about 5 years ago, we are just now starting to regain good deer numbers back from it. The affects still show in the hunting season with the lost of about 9 days still off the firearm season.

The area that I hunt already has seen drastic herd cuts over the last several years even with fewer hunters out. I hope this outbreak doesn't add to more loss. I hunt north central PA.
