Great end to a horrible start
My friend and I went into an area we were slightly familiar with. I could not find a good tree, finally climbed up one, dropped my gear bag from 15 feet, climbed down, climbed back up, and realized the tree was on the "dead" side. Sent my friend a text saying basically "screw this area I am getting down looking for a new set (since it was now light)". 10 minutes later four does walked through some thickets, I raised my gun, shot at a doe that stopped perfectly in a lane. I hear a voice asking if I got it. After all the trials of the morning, I had set up about 80-90 yards from my friend. Anyway, I get down to look for blood and he comes over. He decides to walk through a bottom area and back around to the direction my deer ran. BOOM!!! He shoots. I hear him whistle and walk into the bottom to find a doe down. I think it is his, go back and start looking for blood where I shot at the doe. He yells over to me the deer in the bottom is the one I shot. He shot one too on a ridge leading to the bottom. After a miserable start, we ended the last day of gun season with 2 does down about 1 1/2 hours after LST. Unfortunately, his was 10#'s heavier than mine which he has already reminded of me 5 times. I used a new slug this season after hitting an 11 pointer pretty good last year with Hornady SSt's and losing the deer only to find it the next morning eaten by coyotes. The new slugs Winchester Dual Bonds did the trick at around 55 yards.
