Reminds me of hunting prairie rats er, prairie dogs many, many years ago outside of Dillon, MT. An army buddy invited me to visit his home town. We used Ruger Mk II's with 4 or 6 inch barrel and were hitting the crazy critters out to 100 yards.
The local ranchers didn't seem to mind, as long as it was the prairie rats we were hitting and not the cows. The rat holes were a nuisance to both cattle and horses, causing many broken legs, so we availed ourselves of several boxes of .22 long rifle apiece before heading out to pasture. At times, we saw only the heads sticking above ground. Hitting something the size of a half dollar from 75 to 100 yards was something we were never certain about, not until seeing the dust and dirt flying thereby confirming a hit.
Those were the days . . . . . . . . . .
