Tips on my food plot
 

I have tried and failed on my food plot i think its not gettin enough sunlight but i dont want to clear to many trees and limbs any sugestions on anything i might have luck with that grows good in shade

Im from upstate south carolina, keep that in mind if u suggest anything

other than rye grass I don't know what will grow in low sunlight. I've had problems the last 3 years in PA with good sun. This year had low rainfall on what was left from last year's clover. Maybe some of the other members have some suggestions for your area and needs.

I tried for years to get a plot to grow back in the woods, but it never worked out for me. There are a couple different things working against you there...one is the light issue, the other is the critters will feel more secure there and they will likely not give it a chance to get established before mowing it off. This was always my biggest problem back in the woods. Also it is hard to find a big enough spot. If you can only plant a half acre plot back in the woods even if it does come up good the deer and turkeys will kill it by eating it off as soon as it comes out of the ground. at least that's what happened to me. This year I moved my plot out in the open and planted about 6 acres. It is working much better than the small plots in the woods.

You might try some orchard grass.

Low rain fall is also another issue we have. Thanks for the tips.

When the leaves start falling off the trees toss out some wheat seed with a good rain it will come up

These are the tips on my food plot.
1.if you join the national turkey federation, you as a member can get FREE seeds for plots, all depends on what you local chapters have.
2.buying off brand name seeds, this can cut your cost in half
3.buying lime in Bulk, from a lime company, they will come and spread it for less than you can buy it by the bag.

Mushrooms. Ha! Seriously not alot of options for shade. Inland Sea Oats comes to mind it's a native grass that grows in shade. I believe it's range is from SE. US to Texas. Not sure about nutritional value, but has large seed heads. Should atleast be good attractant for deer and turkey.

Now that I think about it. Mushrooms may be worth checking into.
