What I do to start a mineral lick is I buy a 40 lb sac of mineral salt and a 40 lb bag of stock salt and I add that to an area that is about 8'x8' that I have tilled up with my tiller or if the ground is soft a shovel and hoe. I mix it in really, really well and the deer will come to it like crazy. You can also add di-calcium phosphate but it is hard to find around where I live for some reason. Then place a trail cam next to the lick site and come back to check it in about 3-4 weeks. I do this in the early to mid spring (depending on the weather). I typically refresh the site 2-3 times a year. Usually I'll just use a gallon of the deer cane, but occasionally I'll put a trophy rock there and half way cover it up with dirt.
HM is right, if you are wanting to feed them corn is the best, hands down, in my book. Especially late November through spring time.
