Little league World Series

I covered the LLWS in Williamsport, PA last year and I have to say, it was one of most enjoyable sporting events I have ever covered. This is a 13-year old pitcher from Aruba with a 97-mph fastball. Note the ball in midair. Most of the batters swung after th ball was in the catcher's glove.

I would much rather see the kids play over the pro's anyday I do think it is a lot more exciting

I got a full page, all color feature out of it and had more emails than just about anything I have done in recent times. I was up there four days and had a ball.

I'm guessing you mean since the mound is not at 60feet 6inches, the speed of his pitch is as if it's coming at 97mph. I'm sorry, but there's not a kid on this planet that can throw 97mph legitimately.

Better not tell the LLWS that. They compute actual speed of the pitch at 60 feet with what it would be from a regular mound. The kids throw about 72-74 and that is about mid-90's from a major league mound. It is determined by the amount of time the batter has to react.

As per this article, it says that little league games for kids 12 years old and under are 46ft from plate to mound. For 13 year olds it's 60ft 6in. Are you sure this kid wasn't a 12 year old playing on a 46ft mound? The reason I'm asking is this- in softball (which I coach as well as baseball- it's my job!) they often say that a softball pitcher is throwing 60 mph but to a batter it's as if it's coming 90 mph because of the short distance (43feet). They are basing it off of baseball's 60ft 6in when they make this comparison. Basically what I'm saying, there is NO way a 13 year old kid is going to throw 97mph period. Now, if he was on a 46ft mound, and throwing maybe 70mph, it would appear to the batter as though it was 97mph. It's a comparison thing b/c major leaguers typically have to hit off pitchers throwing mid 90's. That's what baseball and softball fans are taking into account in the back of their mind and why they make the comparison for those folks who think 70mph from 46ft isn't THAT fast... when actually it is.

Daddus, are you re-reading old posts again? We haven't talked about DWTS or American Idol in about 6 months or more! lol

btw... american idol is TONS better than that stupid X-factor.

I have no idea, it isn't my job and I don't care. Whatever it is is what it is, if that is a problem for you, LLWS has a web site. Take it up with them. They say the kids throw the equivilent of a 95mph fastball or whatever speed it was. I am having way too muc fun poaching eggs and turkeys to worry about it.
