Thumbs up thinning the herd

over the last 3 years we started to thin the deer herd in out area. we had an out of control herd with alot of does. the area involved was about 2 square miles with about 1500 acres of timber the rest mostly crop land mixed with residental. working with the DNR bioligists in our area we were advised to take approx 80 head a year for 5 years. our first year we took 65 of which 40 were does the second year we took 85 with about 65 does. this year we tood 98 with about 84 does. after the close of the 07 season i did a deer in fields count and came up with 128 deer i could see. it's a long process to thin a herd but if you keep trying it will work

Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison.
Genesis 27:3 "The thinking deer hunter should mature through three phases during his hunting life. First phase, "I need to kill a deer." Second phase, I want to harvest a nice deer. And last phase, we must manage this resource so our children and their children can experience the grand tradition of good deer hunting." - Jim Slinsky
