Barack Obama Makes His Stance Clear
Barack Obama Makes His Stance Clear
January 18, 2008 (National)

In a town meeting near Las Vegas on January 16, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama expressed his support of animal rights.

In the past, he has sponsored a bill opposing horse slaughter in his home state of Illinois.

“I think how we treat out animals reflects how we treat each other,” he said. “And it’s very important that we have a president who is mindful of the cruelty that is perpetrated on animals.”

Mike Markarian, executive vice president of the HSUS and president of the Humane Society Legislative Fund keeps a blog recording the stance of all candidates on animal rights issues. According to Markarian, Obama is “a dedicated supporter of animal protection at the state and federal levels.”

While fellow Democratic candidates John Edwards and Hilary Clinton have strong records of voting for animal rights, neither has publicly expressed an endorsement by the HSUS.

Well, I'M for animal rights! Right in my sights, right in my pot, etc. Although, honestly, as a horse owner, I'm usually against horse slaughter.

Does that animal rights thing include hunting wild game? I understand horse slaugtering, dog fighting, chicken fights and all that domesticated animal stuff.

i agree. i think not hunting wild game, like deer, is inhumane because it would alow overpopulation and therefore many deaths worse than a bullet. not to mention suffering before that death (sickness, starvation, ect.). just my opinion.
