I hold out for mature bucks but every year that I do not get one with a bow during the rut I am pissed! Who else is with me here? I got only the late season with the bow now. Gun is starting this weekend but its not the same! Just needed to vent!

Everyone should hunt for and shoot what they are wanting to. That's what individualism is all about. However, if not letting the air out of one becuase you passed up lots of lesser bucks, makes you angry, perhaps you might want to re-think your situation. Hunting is supposed to be fun and if not getting one makes it not fun for you, maybe you should loosen up your restrictions a tad. (Just a suggestion)
In the two prior seasons to this one, I passed on 9 bucks of 8 pnts or more on our Ky property. I decided perhaps I should loosen my expectations and have enjoyed my year this year more, already. Do what makes you happy, don't make the hunting season a failure or overly aggravating by hoping & holding out for a biggun' every year. (simply one man's advice)
Best of luck for the rest of your seasons, no matter what you decide. |

I'm glad that I never became a trophy hunter, couldn't stand the self imposed pressure. Hunting for me is enjoyment enough and filling a tag is a bonus. My son is becoming a horn hunter, to each their own, set your own standards and hopefully you are content with-in those boundaries. I think as we age we tend to appreciate the small stuff more and more and not worry about adding any additional pressures. When I hunt, I hunt hard, play the chess game to the best of my ability, however, it's all fun to me.

I'm out to fill my tags and only pass up shots on deer because of legal or ethical issues. I wish I had the luxury of picking and choosing deer based on trophy status. but as I have always said, the rack is a bonus in the harvest.

I don't think you will find many to be with you on that one. I don't know how much time you have spent in the woods, but apparently not enough to appreciate hunting for what it is (or used to be). Maybe this is what hunting is now..."if I don't kill a mature buck every year I'm pissed!" I think a lot of this has come from hunting "industry" replacing hunting tradition and heritage. Sad.

If I got pissed because I didn't get a monster every year, I'd have stopped hunting a LOOOOOOOOONG time ago.
I agree with the guys above.... enjoy the hunt. There will be years when you don't get a mature monster.

mature, immature, buck, doe, antlers, no antlers. LOL
Venison is Venison and as soon as you learn that antlers just happen to come attached to some of the bucks, you'll sleep much better.
