I had a similar shot this week, the arrow hit the shoulder and only got 4.5" of penetration. I watched the deer the next night feeding in a corn field and he crossed the road in font of me.

I shot a nice 8pt three years ago in early October, and had a similar shot. Shoulder hit, and only a few inches of penetration. I looked for it that night, and then the next morning. I found the top part of my shaft, with no blood on it. I was really bummed, but hoped he had survived! I saw the buck a few times over the next month or so, and then in mid December, I got a second chance on the same buck, and this time... the shot was true and he ended up in the freezer. It was a neat season, with a happy ending. He had worn the hair from the impact site, and it had grown back with a short patch showing off my missed shot. Kind of cool..... gotta love the way things work out!
