Honestly, I've never hunted deer with a shotgun, but in the situation that you described (30 yards or under), I'd try the shotgun. The 7 mm was certainly not designed for this short range - just the opposite . You might not even be able to pick up the sight picture in your scope (power?) fast enough at that range, and you'd most likely have to shoot very quickly. On th eother hand, the deer hunting shotguns are designed for exactly that kind of setup. Anyway, that's my thinking on the subject.
