Default Food Plots: Are they ethical?

Got a whitetail hunting book by Peter Fiduccia for Christmas. Good book with lots of info and advice. Two chapters are dedicated to setting up food plots and growing trees, setting out minerals, etc. that attract deer and promote antler growth. I don't have the land it takes to do this, but it occurred to me that, in some ways, this didn't seem much different than setting out bait or salt licks. I know that in certain parts of the country, the rules (laws) regarding this kind of activity vary, and if you are doing it, power to you - maybe I'm even a little jealous, but I woud like to know what the general feeling is about this kind of setup.
