do these rifles have that much crud in the barrel? bought it for my son early this summer and really just cant seem to get it clean. i have used window cleaner, hoppe's #9, and wd-40 with really no good results. wet patch first, brush next, a couple dry patches next, then the jag a few times till the patch is clean. go to run rem oil on the home stretch and that patch comes out looking almost as bad as the first.
Plug the bore end at the muzzle, stand it up on the muzzle, fill the bore with Hoppe's #9 or Sweet's 7.62 or your favorite cleaner and let it sit for an hour or two. Then run a brush thru it vigorously. It may have dried cosmoline in there for a 100 years or so...
brake cleaner to get all that cosmoline out. also pay attention to the action and trigger area.will be slam full of that stuff. get a plastic tote, strip all wood from rifle, put parts in plastic container, pour brake cleaner, let soak
It's the cosmoline. Get some mineral spirits or paint thinner and let all the metal parts soak in it for 20 minutes or so. That should get rid of most of it, has for my three Mosin Nagants anyway.
WD-40 also works well to break down cosmoline, that what helped me clean mine.
