I think i would chose the winchester, the reviews of the new model 70's have been positive.I dont wanna start an argument but the rugers ive seen are hit or miss in the accuracy dept.(imho).Have you looked at a CZ550(30/06)hammer forged barrel, mauser action, good adj trigger with the option of a set trigger, alot more gun for less money.
I have both(older models) 77 and M-70, they both shoot great. As far as Featherweight, I personally don't care for a super-light rifle, I feel a long gun with a little more weight is a lot more stable, especially when shooting offhand. They are both comparable as far as features go, sounds to me like you would rather have a lam stock. If that's the case, your choice is solved!
Weight is the thing I need to shed as I don't like heavy rifles anymore. I wouldn't want to shoot 300mag in a 6 lb rifle but a 260 Rem with a 140 gr would be a great deer rifle in a light weight model. I guess you have to decide what will work best for the $'s spent. You know women knew that buying/shopping really is fun, and they tried to keep us out of that loop. Have fun shopping and let us know what you brought home.
I love the featherweights. I killed my first deer 19 years ago with a Model 70 Featherweight in 7X57, so that might explain why I am partial to that one. I think I am going to pick one up in .308 this summer myself.
