I also observe squirrel to tell me if other game is approaching. I also use blue jays. Most of the time food squabbles, squirrel's and other birds make blue jays go ballistic but occasionally a deer will be the root cause.
My point here is use other animal behavior as an early warning system to your hunting skills.
