you should never weld without a helmet, and if you weld on a regular basis you would only be doing your self a favor to invest in a nice helm. you can get one for about $200. a nice helm would make welding much easyer. pluss you can have compleate controll over how dark your lens gets. if you must weld with a non audo helm, get one with a # 10 lens.
